• Licensing your dog is more than just following state and local law; a license on your dog demonstrates that you care about your pet and that you
    are a responsible pet owner!

Dog owners often believe that their dog will never get out of the house or the yard, but it happens. If your dog gets away from you, a license tag
around his or her neck tells everyone that the dog belongs to someone who will want them back. Our Animal Control Officers will be able to look up the home address and contact information of any stray dog and notify the owners quickly.

Besides helping to reunite you with your pet, a license confirms that your dog is up-to-date on rabies vaccinations, which protects the health and
safety of all the residents and pets in the City. Additionally important -- your purchase of a dog license helps provide the funding to Animal Services for staff and facilities to care for your stray animals, as well as spay and neuter programs, the best way to prevent unwanted litters of puppies and kittens.

License Fees

In the City of Los Angeles, every dog must be spayed or neutered*.

This helps keep the population of dogs at a level so that every dog can have a home.

An annual dog license for an altered dog is $20.

Seniors aged (62+) or disableds living in the City of Los Angeles may qualify to receive a $10.00 dog license if you show proof of current rabies vaccination and meet the low income requirements. Please visit any of our shelters to receive the license.

* Very limited exemptions exist, and additional fees apply if an exemption is approved. You cannot renew an unaltered dog license without applying for and receiving an exemption. For information and applications
